Since 1969, Bird Dog Marketing Group has emerged as a global leader in child-resistant (CR) package testing.

Established in 1969, Bird Dog Marketing Group has emerged as a global leader in child-resistant (CR) package testing. With over five decades of experience, the company collaborates with a diverse clientele, including pharmaceutical, agricultural, chemical, and consumer product companies, ensuring their packaging meets stringent safety standards to protect children.

Commitment to Safety and Standards

At the core of Bird Dog Marketing Group's operations is a dedication to safeguarding children from accidental poisonings. The company adheres to rigorous testing protocols, including the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) 16 CFR 1700.20 and the international ISO 8317 standards. These protocols evaluate the effectiveness of child-resistant packaging, ensuring that containers are difficult for children under five years of age to open while remaining accessible to adults.

Comprehensive Testing Services

Bird Dog Marketing Group offers an extensive range of testing services, encompassing various package types such as:

  • Aerosol overcaps
  • Blister Packs (both reclosable and non-reclosable)
  • Continuous thread and snap closures
  • Pump dispensers (finger, trigger, and overcaps)
  • Flexible and metal containers
  • Unit dose packages

Each test is conducted following strict adherence to established guidelines, ensuring consistent and reliable results.

55 Years of Experience Testing Thousands of Unique Package Systems

The experienced team at Bird Dog Marketing Group has proctored testing for thousands of unique child-resistant packages and observed how children 41 months to 52 months old are sometimes able to access the child-resistant package system. The BDMG Proctors are keenly aware of the importance of package design in preventing children from accessing potentially poisonous products. The proctors can communicate what they observe in the field when a package fails. This knowledge assists package designers in their redesign process to ensure the package is as safe as possible once it reaches the consumer.

Global Accreditation and Recognition

Demonstrating its commitment to quality, Bird Dog Marketing Group is an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory. This accreditation underscores the company's technical competence and ability to produce precise and accurate test data. Such credentials are vital in the global marketplace, where consistent and trusted results are paramount.

A Legacy of Excellence

Under the leadership of co-founders David S. Hipple and Mark D. Perkins, Bird Dog Marketing Group has built a reputation for excellence. Their combined expertise in respiratory care, business administration, and child-resistant package testing has propelled the company to the forefront of the industry.

Conclusion

Bird Dog Marketing Group's unwavering commitment to safety, quality, and innovation has solidified its position as a premiere provider of child-resistant package testing services worldwide. By adhering to stringent standards and continuously evolving to meet industry needs, the company plays a crucial role in protecting children from potential hazards associated with household products.

The Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA), enacted in 1970, is one of the cornerstones of child safety regulations in the United States. Its primary goal is to prevent children from accessing hazardous household substances like medications, household chemicals, and other toxic products. As part of this initiative, the law requires certain products to be packaged in child-resistant containers. The question is: how did the government determine the specific age ranges of children who should be tested for these packaging requirements?

Our test proctors administering adult-use package testing are often asked, “Why are you only testing adults 50-70 years of age?” Here’s the story behind that decision. When the U.S. Congress passed the Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970 (PPPA), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) required child-resistant packaging for specific drugs and household chemicals that could harm children. Package manufacturers developed and introduced new child-resistant packaging to comply with the requirements. Per the PPPA, the specialty packaging required certification that they were child-resistant. At the time, the adult-use effectiveness portion of the package test protocols included adult test subjects 18-45 years of age, a significant change from our current adult-use effectiveness subjects who are 50-70.

BDMG is proud to celebrate 55 years of child-resistant package testing, continuing Gene Miller's legacy of saving children's lives from accidental poisoning. Many things have changed since the passage of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970, but the dedication of our team and our clients to working together in the testing of child-resistant packaging has remained the same.
